How to Clean a Bath and Shower Tray

Baths and trays collect soap scum and limescale, which dull the surface. The right cleaner for your material matters more than elbow grease.

Method

  1. Rinse the surface, then apply a non-abrasive bathroom cleaner
  2. Leave it for a few minutes to loosen the scum
  3. Wipe with a soft sponge, working from the top down, and rinse
  4. Treat limescale around taps with vinegar on a cloth, then rinse and dry

Avoid

  • Abrasive powders and scourers on acrylic, which scratch easily
  • Bleach on coloured baths
  • Mixing cleaners, especially bleach and descalers

Stained or yellowed baths

A paste of bicarbonate of soda and water, left briefly and rinsed, can lift light staining. For heavy discolouration, a professional deep clean may be quicker and safer for the finish.

Common questions

Why does my bath get a grey ring?

It is usually soap scum and body oils. Regular cleaning with a non-abrasive cleaner prevents it.
