Method

  1. Sweep or vacuum first, so you are not pushing grit around
  2. Mix warm water with a small amount of floor cleaner
  3. Mop in sections, wringing out the mop well, and change the water when it is dirty
  4. Rinse with clean water if the floor looks sticky, then dry or let it air dry

Tips

  • Use less cleaner, because too much leaves a film
  • Use a soft brush on grout lines, and see our guide to cleaning grout
  • Place mats at doors to reduce the dirt coming in

Different floors, different care

  • Ceramic and porcelain tile: handle most cleaners, but not abrasive ones on glazed finishes
  • Natural stone: use a pH-neutral cleaner, never acid
  • Vinyl: avoid excess water at the seams, and avoid harsh solvents
  • Textured tiles: use a stiff brush so dirt is lifted out of the grooves

Common questions

Why does my floor look streaky after mopping?

Usually too much cleaner or dirty mop water. Use a small amount of product and fresh water.
